Split is a city located on the coast of Croatia, and it’s considered by many to be one of the most beautiful Croatian cities. Dubrovnik is a medieval walled city in southern Croatia that’s nicknamed The Emerald City because its walls are made from greenish-colored serpentine stone.Zagreb, officially known as Zagrebačka županija (County of Zagreb), is the capital and largest city of Croatia with over 1 million inhabitants.
Split, Dubrovnik and Zagreb were all contenders to be my pick of Croatia travel destinations. But, in the end, it was Dubrovnik that won me over. I was initially attracted to the city by its picturesque medieval town centre. The walled old town is surrounded by a number of fortifications and has a number of important historical sites, including the Ragusa cathedral and the General’s Palace. It is simply beautiful to wander around, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling town. These walls, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, are an impressive 1.8 km long and up to 12 m high. They are also well-preserved, making it a great place to explore.
Dubrovnik’s other draw is its stunningly well-preserved Royal Palace. The palace was originally built in the 15th century, and has been variously occupied by the Habsburg, French and Croatian monarchs. It is now home to the Dubrovnik city museum, which is a great place to poke around. Zagreb was another contender for my Croatia travel destination. The city has a number of interesting highlights, not least of which is the impressive Town Hall. This neo-Gothic building, which was completed in 1898, is a great example of Renaissance architecture. The city is also home to a number of other interesting historical sites, including Ban Jelačić Square and the Church of the Sacred Heart.
Zagreb also has a great party scene, which makes it a great place to spend a night or two. The city is also well-connected by public transport, making it easy to get around. My final Croatia travel destination was Rovinj. This charming city is situated on the peninsula that separates the Kvarner Gulf from the Adriatic Sea. Rovinj is a great place to spend a day or two if you are looking for a relaxed and idyllic coastal city environment. The city’s old town is a picturesque place and is well-worth a visit. There are also a number of restaurants and cafes in the old town, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the sun. Split, Dubrovnik and Zagreb all have their own special charms.
